Yates: Spirit Is Good

14 November 2013

Mark Yates looks ahead to this weekend's Sky Bet League Two match away at Wycombe.

Robins chief Mark Yates talking to the media this morning about the weekend's match versus Wycombe Wanderers:

"It's always not nice to win games and unfortunately it was a cup game that everyone expected us to win but we didn't. We have had to take a look at ourselves and dust ourselves down so we can put ourselves in the right frame of mind to go again and we have done that. The players' attitude has been good. They are all disappointed because they knew the first half in particular on Saturday was not good enough but you can only dig yourself out of it and go again.

"We are three game unbeaten in the league so what we've got to do now is forget about the FA Cup. We have been fortunate enough, as a club and as a group of staff and players, to have played Tottenham and Everton (over the last two seasons) and West Ham this season. We have reached the third round and benefited financially so we know how important it is. Unfortunately we have denied the club that chance this year but over the last two seasons it has been a bonus because we don't budget for it. We've got to get on with it and we have 31 games to concentrate on with our league form.

"We are working extremely hard as we have done for the last 4 years. It's not from the lack of effort or work rate that things aren't going for us. It's because we have been making mistakes and conceding stupid goals. We have contributed so much to the goals we have conceded so we have to keep working on putting that right and putting the boys in a positive frame of mind. I have no doubt that this group is more than capable. We have started to show that but what we can't do is let Saturday's slip up affect that.

"I don't think there is too much wrong with the way we have played of late - I really don't. The Northampton performance, the York one to an extent, Morecambe and even Rochdale to an extent was positive until we committed football suicide in the final ten minutes but up until then we had been as good as them. We're not far away and it's about being positive with the players, cutting out mistakes and it's almost a fine line of hammering home the importance of concentrating and performing. It's about finding the balance of letting them play and making them a little more relaxed. Those are the fine lines we are working with and we'll keep working to find the right way.

"Dave (Kevan) was good around the place but it happens and it just means Neil and I get back to what we've done for the last 8 years. It was great to have another voice and it was great for all of us but he has moved on and we wish him well.

"Jermaine (McGlashan) has a chance for the weekend but probably not as much of a chance as we would have wanted. I think we've taken the decision that he probably isn't going to be involved because Weso wants to make sure he gets some real strength work into those hamstrings to make sure he's ready for the next two games at home.

"The mood around the training ground hasn't been any different for 3 years after the first 6 months that we got here. The spirit is good amongst the group and they work hard.

"We didn't see to much attacking intent from Wycombe the other night because Swindon had so much of the ball but we knew a bit about them before because we have had them watched before. It's always good to seem them live though and they made changes to their side from the Saturday but they are at home and they have had a decent run of form. It'll be a decent game of football between two teams that play a diamond so if we play a diamond it'll be about which one works best."
