Yates: Positive Reaction Needed

15 September 2014

Mark Yates thanks departed Koby Arthur and looks ahead to Southend at home.

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates speaking to the press ahead of the home match with Southend on Tuesday:

"It was a call I obviously didn't want to happen (Koby recall) but you are always vulnerable when you get a young loan player with quality and Birmingham feel the need to take him back and use him. He has been a fantastic lad to have around and obviously his goalscoring exploits have done wonders for us and hopefully we provided him with a platform. I know he has enjoyed it because I spoke with him and his agent a lot yesterday. If it is at all possible to get him back then we will have to see but credit to him for taking his opportunity and being a really positive figure in our decent start to the season.

"I need competition and we will continue to strive for that. They need to react positively to Saturday's defeat and after the game we talked about how we played and the response we wanted. It was a good performance from us on Saturday bar scoring a goal with 15/16 efforts at goal and other opportunities when we got into good positions. We looked a good solid team and we're averaging two points a game so there is no need to panic and we need more of what we have been producing.

"It's a good morning of training and nice, bright and lively but we won't burden them with too much. Well give them a brief preview of Southend but it's about us responding in a positive manner liek we have played every game so far and if we do that then we give ourselves a chance of doing anything.

"Luton started better than us but teams will do that and I have no worries there. I just want them to keep building on what we have produced and strive to be better.

"Southend are a good side with good players and managed by Phil Brown so they will know the time of day. It will be a tough game without a shadow of a doubt but every game in this division is and you cannot target teams because it doesn't work like that in this league. We know we have to score more goals but if we keep creating the chances we have had over the last two away games, where the opposition goalkeepers have been man of the match, then it tells you something. If we keep creating chances then they will begin to go in on a regular basis.

"I've already looked (for a Koby replacement) but I've been knocked back on one so we'll see. We might wait until the weekend but we'll see what comes up later today. We have got a number of players on a list which we can go back and see where we are with but I'm not desperate for tomorrow. Probably the one I would have liked for tomorrow is a no at this moment but we'll go from there."
