Yates: Play-Offs Now Unrealistic

11 February 2014

Mark Yates believes the hunt for the play-offs is now over following a loss at Bristol Rovers.

Robins manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following tonight's 1-0 loss away at Bristol Rovers:

"The goal was a moment we should have dealt with better. Three or four mistakes led to the goal so it was disappointing because we gave them a lead and we couldn't get it back. The effort was there in a battle between two evenly contested teams but it's just disappointing that we've got nothing from it. We have not been ruthless enough and we have missed a couple of good ones and they've had a few chances before finally sticking one in the back of the net. There were some really good performances but again we have come away with nothing.

"I thought there was a period in the middle of the first half where we lost too many tackles and headers for me. They were hitting us on the break in the second half but the effort and commitment was there. Stevey (Elliott) hit the post, Sido (Jombati) was unlucky with the rebound from Matt's shot and there were a couple of headed chances so to come away with nothing is disappointing.

"I wanted more and to win games you need 7 or 8 to be better than the opposition. It was even I thought but unfortunately they scored the goal. We gave it a good go but just didn't get anything. It's a tough place to come and unfortunately we have not been good enough to prise them open. We had a couple of good chances but we just didn't have that final ball or killer touch so it's back to training to prepare for Wycombe now.

"We didn't want to match them up. We just wanted to get back to playing open attractive football that we tried to play in the last half an hour against York. I took inspiration from that so I thought Sammy, Terry and Jermaine just behind Jamie would be a positive one. If you take your chances then you could be talking about going in front but we didn't and their goal came from mistakes so to be punished like that is disappointing.

"I think the play-offs are unrealistic and we all do. We are not winning games full stop but we've got to keep our foot on the gas and try to win as many games as we can as quickly as we can. It's tight at the bottom and it's tight just above us because we could have moved up to 9th or 10th tonight but unfortunately we have got beat and that pack has now got a little closer to us. We have to make sure we do the right thing and start winning some games quickly. We needed a win Saturday and we needed a win tonight - no doubt about that. We have Wycombe on Saturday so we need to lick our wounds, learn from it, be better from it and we must do that every time we play. As long as I get the same attitude off everyone then performances and results will come."
