Yates: Could Have Been Better

12 April 2014

Mark Yates satisfied with a point but believes his players should have done a lot better.

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates speaking to the media following the 1-1 draw away at Exeter:

"There were lots of chances at both ends but I thought it was a tight game. We weren't at our best but we dug in and probably had the clearer chances with Jamie and then the one at the end with Sammy in the 92nd minute. That probably sums up Sammy's luck and confidence in front of goal for some reason. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to convert a couple of decent chances he has had but I'm not going to start criticising him for that now. We could have been talking about a win, a needed win but Exeter threw everything at us and started really well. We responded well and it's a tough place to come because they were going to give it everything and we weathered it. We could have played a lot better in the second half but I'm pleased with a point I suppose.

"It was a good performance from Harry (Williams) for an hour and he did more than alright. We started poorly for 12 minutes and they had started really strongly but them scoring helped us if you like. David Noble was instrumental in getting the ball down to try and create chances and control the game. Byron scored a good goal but we didn't really do what we set out to do. We weren't in control of the game and there were too many losses of possession which resulted in them attacking us. We stood strong thought and I can only compliment them for that after last week.

"We (Byron and Mark) had a difference of opinion six weeks ago and from that he has been magnificent. I think he has been good all season but we always want a bit more from Byron because we see the physical specimen that he is, the ability that he has got and the pace he has got so we want more. I think he has really started to deliver that over the last 6 weeks and he can be pleased with his total so far (15) and he can look to get a couple more before the end of the season as well.

"Of course it was pleasing to give local players a game but we have to do it at the right times and getting the system to suit us. Harry's best position is off the striker by himself and he has done that with Bobbie (Dale) in the youth team but he knows that it is easier to score goals in the youth league than this league. He is a player of potential that we like and he can be pleased with his contribution today. Jamie (Cureton) almost slotted him through after six minutes and it skipped on through but he makes things happen and he has lots of goals this season. It is pleasing. Zack and a few of the others may get a chance between now and the end of the season but we must make sure we finish strongly and I have always said that. We have got to make sure we've got enough points but that doesn't mean they won't be in team because if we want to play them then we will play them."
