Wycombe Winner Ruling

26 November 2013

The Dubious Goals Committee have come to a conclusion about Cheltenham Town's Wycombe winner.

Cheltenham Town's second goal at Wycombe Wanderers on November 16 has been ruled as an own goal by the Dubious Goals Committee.

The committee, which was initially set up by the Premier League to provide a final ruling when the identity of a goal scorer is disputed, considered video evidence submitted by the club.

The committee ruled that the initial shot from Sam Deering would not have travelled into the goal without the intervention of Wycombe player Billy Knott, who provided a heavy deflection to send it into the net.

This is the first instance in which a Cheltenham Town goal has been referred to the Dubious Goals Committee and Club Secretary Paul Godfrey commented: "It all came about because on the day of the match, the Opta Sport reporter at the game gave it as an own goal.

"This means that all newspapers, radio, tv and websites would have shown the goal as an own goal.

"However, the match referee noted it down in his report as a Deering goal so the Football League asked for a video clip to make a final decision.

“The committee is made up of former players and referees and they analyse the match video to determine which player made the decisive contact with the ball that effected a goal.

"It's a bit disappointing for Sam as it would have been his first competitive goal for the club but hopefully it won't be too long before he opens his account."

The goal is the second this season scored for Cheltenham Town by an opposition player, Andy Proctor of Bury having 'opened the scoring' for Cheltenham Town at Gigg Lane back in August.
