Memories of 99: Programme Notes

22 April 2014

Steve Cotterill's programme notes from the day Cheltenham made history.

The following are Steve Cotterill's programme notes ahead of kick off v. Yeovil on Thursday 22 April 1999.

Good evening everyone and welcome to Whaddon Road. I would like to welcome from Yeovil Town for this evening's game. In the case of their Head Coach, Colin Lippiatt, I would like to welcome him for the second time this week (he was spotted in the crowd at our game against Forest Green on Tuesday!) and to congratulate them on their excellent season to date. Yeovil have built up a particulary impressive record away from home, although we will obviously be trying to do something about that tonight!

Looking back to the Forest Green game, I thought that we did enough to win it. We created plenty of chances and, perhaps on another night a few more of them would have gone in. With the score at only 1-0 we had to live on the edge of our nerves and there was always a possibility that something would fall for the opposition. Overall, I felt that we played well but didn't take our chances, and that we could have defended better with regard to the goal we conceded.

Having said all that, we now know exactly what we have to do to win the league. A win tonight would do, althoughwe are fully aware that Ueovil will provide a very tought test for us. If the result doesn't come tonight then we still have three more games in which to gather the points that we need.

Obviously both myself and the players would prefer it to happen sooner rather than later. It would be really nice to be able to enjoy the last week of the season, having lifted the pressure that we have all felt for the past few weeks.

I'd like to thank you all for the support that you gave us during the Forest Green match. The vocal encouragement was excellent throughout the game. Please get behind the lads tonight in the same way that you did on Tuesday evening, and we'll see what happens.

Enjoy the game.

Steve Cotterill
