VIDEO: Hanks relishing chance to take on old pal Penn

31 October 2014

Joe Hanks is hoping for a chance to test himself against one of the players who helped him make a successful transition from youth team prospect to senior professional as York City visit Whaddon Road tomorrow.
Midfielder Russ Penn was one of the more experienced members of Mark Yates’ squad who offered advice and guidance to teenager Hanks, who was promoted to the first team during the second year of his scholarship two seasons ago.

Penn is making his first return since leaving Cheltenham in January, after which he helped the Minstermen reach the League Two play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten by Fleetwood Town.
Hanks said: “I am really looking forward to a chance to face Penna, who was a great lad while he was here at Cheltenham.
“It’s going to be a good challenge and I am sure he’s looking forward to coming back. He looked after me a lot when he was here and we’d go out early before training and work on extras.
“When he told me he was leaving I was surprised, but he told me it happens a lot in football and you just have to get on with it. Hopefully now I can get one over him and then it’ll be nice to have a chat afterwards.”
