Tom King signs first professional contract

19 January 2024

The club are delighted to announce that first year scholar Tom King has signed his first professional contract with Cheltenham Town.

The 17-year-old puts pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year deal commiting his near future to the Robins.

King has 18 months remaining on his scholarship but will now spend that period plus another year with Darrell Clarke and the first team.

Originally from South Gloucestershire, the forward first joined the club as an academy player back in May 2022.

King made his debut for the Under 18s as a 15-year-old and has since gone on to become a mainstay in the side.

He became the club's youngest ever EFL player on the opening day of the season when he replaced Curtis Thompson in the 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

And he made more club history in October when he was called up to the England Under 18s, becoming the first Robins player to be called up to an England squad at any age.

After signing the contract, King said:

"It's an amazing feeling because I've been working hard for it since I joined the club about a year and a half ago.

"I never expected to get this offer so early and now I just want to get going. It's going to be a challenge but I'm ready to take it on.

"It's been some year and it's gone quick, from making my debut, to being selected for England and now getting a pro contract, I just need to keep working hard."

Reacting to the brilliant news Academy Manager Tim Bell added:

"First of all a massive congratulations to Tom on this achievement. Tom is an exciting player with bags of potential whom we believe with time will go on to develop into a player that the fans can see play regularly for the first team.

"A special mention goes to all the staff across the club who have have been apart of Tom’s development journey. There is some incredible work happening across the club to develop our future players and this is sign of our continued progress these past few years.

"I’m excited for the academy and the club as we continue provide a pathway into the first team for our players. We always want to produce homegrown players and this news shows that pathway is there for all our future prospects."
