Long after Barnsley loss

2 September 2023

Cheltenham Town captain Sean Long spoke to the local media after this afternoon's League One defeat to Barnsley.

Second half goals from Devante Cole and Max Watters saw the Robins fall to their third league home defeat of the season.

Speaking after the match, Long said:

"It was a sucker punch for us. It's so frustrating and hard to take. We don't like losing games and it's just really frustrating.

"It's just not falling for us at the minute.

"I thought in the first half we created more chances than we have been recently and on another day we score one or two of those chances and the game is different."

Long emphasised the realities of the team at this current moment, with scoring goals hard to come by and conceding them a frequent occurence.

"I haven't seen any of the goals back but at the moment, teams don't have to do much to score against us but we have to work miracles to score ourselves.

"It just seems to be falling for these teams when they get chances and it hits the back of the net.

"We have fallen the wrong side of a few tight games now this season and it just feels we keep getting sucker punched."

The Robins gave a spirited performance and came almightily close to taking the lead on a number of occasions before Cole gave the visitors the lead.

Long assesed the Tykes opening goal and what went wrong to see the Robins fall behind.

"It all comes from our corner and then we don't deal with the second phase. I don't know who it was but that doesn't matter, we need to stop the counter.

"Then they broke on the counter we knew they are good at that and they punished us.

"It's not good enough, locking out the box and that what can happen against teams like Barnsley."

With the international break coming over the next few weeks, Long had his say on whether the break comes at a good time or not.

"I think you can look at it both ways. When you lose a game you just want to get straight back out there to try and fix it.

"But I think with the little spell we've been on and the amount of new players that have come in, I think it might be good to re-stock and look at ways of moving forward.
