Clarke after first Robins win

21 October 2023

Robins manager Darrell Clarke was delighted after his side picked up a valuable three points against Cambridge United this afternoon.

Liam Sercombe's early stunner was the pinnacle of a brilliant performance from Clarke's side that saw them walk away worthy winners.

"I'm really pleased for my players," began Clarke.

"For the shift that they put in over the last two or three weeks to the messages they've been responding to.

"We've got ourselves a good result and shown a decent performance so I'm really pleased with the group."

It's a first win for Clarke and for the club this season, a much needed three points after a turbulent start to the campaign.

Clarke urged everyone to 'enjoy the moment' but isn't getting too carried away, with a lot of work still to be done.

"We have to enjoy the moment becase we haven't had many of these this season," he continued.

"But it's just one win, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

"I want the fans to enjoy tonight, they can hopefully have a nice beer tonight and enjoy that and then it's back to work Monday.

Sercombe's goal after just five minutes was a beauty, as he chipped an effort over U's keeper Jack Stevens straight into the top corner.

Clarke and the Robins number eight have worked together previously at Bristol Rovers, and the gaffer was full of praise for his midfield man of the match.

"It's a great finish. Sercs has got that in the locker and that's why he's got plenty of goals as a professional player.

"He's always been a plesure to work with, he loves being out on the grass and he's the sort of expererienced player I'll be relying on."
