FA Youth Cup Report: Robins 3-0 Dorking Wanderers

21 November 2023

The young Robins cruised into round three of the FA Youth Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dorking Wanderers at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

A brace from Tom King and a first half rocket from captain Brandon Liggett helped Town to a convincing vicotry over their Surrey based counterparts.

The Robins took the initiative from the off and came close with two early chances. Alex Wilkie's header went wide before Cam Walters saw one of his own saved off the line.

That early pressure would pay off on the 10-minute mark, when Lenny Johnson found captain Brandon Liggett in the area, who did well to control the ball before finding King at the back post.

The forward got the ball under control before finishing well on the turn, rolling his effort past keeper Harry Charlesworth into the bottom right corner.

It was very nearly two 10 minutes later. Some great work from Freddy Willcox saw him beat his man before he reversed a poweful effort that bounced back off the right hand post.

The second would come moments before the break however, this time Liggett getting a goal of his own.

The skipper saw his original effort parried away by Charlesworth before the Robins number eight rifled home the follow-up into the top left corner, doubling the lead.

After the interval and the Robins continued their dominance, seeing a number of chances go begging to really put the game to bed.

King saw his effort from close range saved off the line by Henry Gunay before Sopuruchukwu Obieri fired just wide after twisting and turning in the box.

Defender Eddie Lewis' controlled header then flew just wide moments before the Robins had their third.

The two first half goalscorers combined well as Liggett released King down the right hand side, before the striker calmly beat Charlesworth to put the game beyond the visitors.

The victory sees the young Robins into the third round of the competition, with a trip to Brammall Lane to face Sheffield United next.
