We are seeking a Lead Sport Scientist who can provide an evidence based approach to planning and can deliver a physical development programme.

The successful candidate will join Cheltenham Town FC Academy and work alongside our strong and passionate multi disciplinary team.

Working Pattern and Work base

Full Time (35 hours)

  • Flexible working arrangements/hours
  • Required to work outside of normal office hours, at evenings and weekends, on bank holidays and public holidays.
  • Required to work across different bases

Travel

Regular travel to fixtures, meetings and other events in connection with performance of the duties detailed below.

Overall purpose of the job

 

 

Enhance an athlete’s ability to perform and meet the physical demands of a professional footballer through injury prevention, rehabilitation and strength and condition programmes.

Line manage and work with the other Academy strength and conditioning coach & Studentships/Internships to develop and deliver the appropriate level of S&C support at all levels in the academy.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

 

 

Personal growth:

  • Undertake self-development to ensure knowledge in relation to all aspect of role is up-to-date and forward thinking
  • Build relationships throughout the Academy and broader

Sports Scientist

  • Working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, in particular with the lead physiotherapist & lead sports therapist on injury prevention using GPS vest to provide analytical data to the sports science team.
  • Working with the lead sports scientist to develop a competency-based athletic development programme and identify age and position specific expectations.
  • Work with the club medical staff to promote & implement the fitness programme, nutrition, prehab and recovery programmes among all players.
  • Work with education providers to provide studentship / internships within the Academy
  • Provide assistance in planning of football sessions (in line with periodisation frameworks: microcyle, mesocycle, macrocycle)
  • Completion and reporting of anthropometric assessment and physiological fitness testing across the season for U18s and U9-U16s.

Strength and Conditioning

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate physical development sessions for the PDP & YDP players, designed to enhance the athletic abilities of the young players. This will include the management of data collection, analysis, reporting and providing effective feedback to coaches, parents and players.
  • Monitoring and assessment of youth development phase player’s physical development through your use of a gym passport and physical ILP.
  • Organise and report on gym based testing.
  • Completion of the PMA
  • Assessment and reporting of strength markers against benchmarks as part of athlete profiling, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ensure health and safety is to the highest standard and that players are advised on the effective and safe use of all equipment. Take responsibility for the maintenance, repair and security of fitness equipment.

Meetings

  • Attend and input into MDT meetings.
  • Attend monthly SS&M meeting
  • Lead academy sports science department meetings.
  • Organise 6 weekly Sport Science Department CPD for Sport Science staff
  • Attendance at the relevant CPD & in-service training programme as specified throughout the season.

Such other duties as may be appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post and to assist the Academy Manager.

 

 

Person Specifications (Essential)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Performance / Science discipline
  • Post Graduate degree in Sports Performance / Science (Desirable)
  • Hold or be working towards accreditation by the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (or equivalent workshops run by equivalent body)
  • Hold a current Basic First Aid for Sport Qualification (current EFAiF)

Required Experience

Experience of working in at least 1 of the following roles:

  • A football club
  • A sports club
  • University

Knowledge and/or experience of at least 1 of the following:

  • Applicants should have relevant undergraduate degree in strength and conditioning or related discipline.
  • Previous experience of attending strength and conditioning CPD programmes
  • Applicants should have experience of working in a professional football club youth development.

ICT experience of PMA, excel, word and any other software as required to carry out the duties required for the job.
