Tim Bell after scholars' 4-0 Bishop's Cleeve victory

28 July 2023

A Cheltenham Town XI made up of Robins scholars defeated Bishop's Cleeve 4-0 at Kayte Lane last night.

First half goals from Bradley Burgess and Ibby Olateju followed by a third from Harry Tustin and Olateju's second late on saw the young Robins to victory.

Academy manager Tim Bell was extremely pleased with the side's performance in front of a crowd up the road at Cleeve.

"It was a great exercise for the lads with and without the ball," began Bell.

"Cleeve had their moments of dominance and we had to be resolute and have good shape and know when to press from our shape.

"It was a good test for our intensity and our mentality in the first 20-30 minutes to get the first goal and it was great to see the boys keep going after that."

Bell was impressed with the mentality of the young squad and spoke on what the experience will give to the team.

"The boys would have taken a lot from tonight in terms of confidence in their own individual performance but also as a collective.

"They can go and play against a step four team in Bishop's Cleeve and get a positive performance and result.

"It just goes to show we are developing not just footballers but people that can go and compete at mens non-league level."

This pre-season has been a frutiful one for Bell and the Robins academy system, with last night's performance only adding to that.

"It's been a pre-season that the PDP staff can be really proud of so far," continued Bell.

"Obviously Ashley (Vincent) was a part of that at the beginning and he's now gone across to the first team, some further success there for us.

"The staff and the players can be really proud of where they are at this current moment in time, and we look forward now to a really tough test against away at Malvern on Tuesday night."

Bell also placed on record his thanks to last night's opponents for putting on a great game for our scholars.

"We'd also like to thank Bishop's Cleeve for taking the game and welcoming us to Kayte Lane," he concluded.

"They've got some great facilities, great hospitality and it was lovely to have a great little crowd there too."
