Thank you Alfie May

7 July 2023

It was confirmed earlier today that Alfie May has departed the club after three and a half years to join Charlton Athletic.

Alfie scored 67 goals in all competitions and played a huge part in our League Two title victory, a record breaking season in League One and a near shock agaisnt one of the best teams in football history.

It all began in January 2020 when Alfie arrived at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium and hit the ground running scoring on his debut in a 3-0 victory over Oldham Athletic, just a day after signing.

He continued that early form, scoring another five goals in 11 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

May would score one of the clubs most famous goals the following January, as the Robins took the lead against recent treble winners Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round.

He was an ever present figure in that 2020/21 Cheltenham side that eventually won the League Two title, taking the club back to the third tier for the first time since 2009.

The fans favourite went on to have an astonishing following season in League One.

He netted an impressive 23 times, four of those coming in an unforgettable 5-5 draw with Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

May was subsequently awarded the clubs players' and supporters' Player of the Year accolades.

Alf didn't stop scoring in the following season either and on the 13th of September 2022, Alfie broke the clubs all-time EFL goalscoring record, netting the winner in a 2-1 win over Cambridge United.

He went on to register 20 league goals last season including memorable braces away to Peterborough United and at home to Forest Green Rovers in the Gloucestershire Derby.

His last action in the Robins red and white saw him coincidentally score in a 2-2 draw agaisnt the Addicks before leaving the field to rapturous applause.

The club would again like to place on record their sincerest thanks to Alfie and wish him all the very best in the future.
