Liam Smith becomes fifth summer signing

20 July 2023

Cheltenham Town are delighted to announce the signing of defender Liam Smith following a succesful trial period at the club.

The 27-year-old puts pen to paper on a one-year-deal with the Robins having departed Dundee United back in May.

Smith spent last week on trial with Wade Elliott and his squad, impressing in his performances against Swindon Supermarine and Weston-Super-Mare.

The Scottish youth international took part in his first training session as a permanent Robin earlier this morning.

Smith played his academy football in his home country of Scotland with Rangers and Hearts before making his debut in Edinburgh aged 18.

He had loan spells with the likes of East Fife, Raith Rovers and lastly St Mirren, where he was a mainstay during their 2017/18 Scottish Championship title win.

Smith departed Hearts to join Ayr United in 2018 before arriving at Tannidice the following year.

He would go on to spend four years with the Tangerines making over 125 appearances before his recent departure.

After signing his one-year-contract with the Robins, Liam said:

"I'm delighted to be here. Obviously I came down last week and I like the place and the club like me so I am delighted to be here permanently.

"For me it was time for a new challenge and I'm delighted that it's going to be at Cheltenham Town.

"I really want to come in and hit the ground running, make a place in the team my own and contribute to hopefully another good season here."

Welcome to the Robins Liam!
