Freestone previews Pompey clash

18 August 2023

Robins defender Lewis Freestone gave his opinions to the local press ahead of this weekend's away clash with Portsmouth.

It's been a tough start to the season for Wade Elliott's side, with the Robins yet to win a competitive game this term.

But Freestone is now an experienced League One defender, fully aware of the league and its competitive nature.

"I think every game is as tough as the next in this league," began Freestone.

"They are all winnable if we're at it, we turn up and we're at our best.

"If we stick to what we're good at, being compact and playing from our shape, the chances will come.

"Hopefully we can kick that off at Portsmouth this weekend."

Clean sheets have also been hard to come by for the Robins so far this season.

Freestone spoke on the importance of keeping the ball out of the net and the springboard it gives the team to go out and perform.

"If we can keep a clean sheet it gives us a good base to build off," Lewis continued.

"We like to start off by having a strong structure and that definitely starts with us at the back.

"I think as long as we keep defending to the best of our ability, it gives us that platform to create more chances."

Manager Elliott has praised the effort and encouraging signs from his teams performances in the last few weeks.

And Freestone is adamant that the squads hard work will soon pay off.

"With the bunch of lads we have here, there's no doubt you are going to get the effort every single game we play.

"Now it's just about adding that little bit of quality and having that bit of composure, to get our foot on the ball so we can compete and start scoring goals."
