Report: Oxford United 4-0 Robins

25 April 2023

Cheltenham Town lost 4-0 on the road to Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium in Sky Bet League One.

Goals from Tyler Goodrham, Kyle Joseph and a brace from Marcus Browne sealed a comfortable three points for the home side.

Aidan Keena hit the target a couple times during the match, but overall the Robins struggled against an Oxford side still battling to stay in the division.

United took the first good opportunity of the game through Billy Bodin, who’s shot down the middle of the goal was saved by Luke Southwood.

Shortly after, Oxford continued dominating possession and inside six minutes Goodrham came very close to scoring from distance, however his curling effort from range was inches wide of the Robins goal.

Eventually, the U’s broke the deadlock near the half-time whistle. Goodrham opened the scoring after tapping in the cross from the right hand-side. Appeals from the Robins players for a potential foul on Ben Williams in the process, but nothing given by referee Will Finnie.

The Robins got off to a good start in the second half, with Aidan Keena testing U’s goalkeeper Simon Eastwood with a shot from the edge of the box, however it was saved well and the home side continued to get back on the front foot.

Former Cheltenham loanee and U’s forward Joseph tapped in from close range after Oxford stole the ball inside the Robins half and put away a simple chance.

Oxford continued to assert their dominance and scored a third through Marcus Browne after some good pressing by the Yellows. Marcus McGuane played the ball wide to Murphy who sent in a delightful cross onto the head of Browne who headed home.

The U's inflicted further pain after goalscorer Browne avoided the challenge of Caleb Taylor, and then tapped the ball past Southwood for his second of the night.

With 17 minutes left, Robins head coach Wade Elliott made three changes at once, however Cheltenham couldn't impose their game on United and fell to 17th in the table after the result.
