May wins League One Goal of the Month for March

14 April 2023

Alfie May has been named Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month winner for March, for his outrageous half-way line strike against Peterborough United.

The forward hit three world class goals in March, with two coming against the Posh, but his first goal of the game to help the Robins win 3-0 that afternoon wins him this month's award.

A flick on from a Cheltenham throw saw the ball come near May just inside Peterborough's half. He controlled it with his left, knocking it into the air and spun around quickly to volley it over the head of Posh goalkeeper Will Norris.

The award for May sees him win both League One player and goal of the month trophies, becoming the first player this season to win both league awards in the same month.

After winning his first League One Goal of the Month trophy, the 29-year-old said: "They are great awards to win. I said it before and I'll say it again, it wouldn't be possible without my teammates.

"It's the first time I've won goal of the month and it's really nice to pick that up. I could've had three nominated!"

May struck a wicked half-volley strike outside the box against Peterborough to confirm our victory against the Posh, and a week before he scored the winner against Fleetwood Town at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium with another great volley.

"Now I just want five more goals, but the most important thing for us is to stay in this league, so we are going to push in the remaining games," said May.

The forward has 15 goals in League One this season, 17 in all competitions. Last season May netted 23, a joint club record highest for a Cheltenham player in a single EFL season with former Robins striker, Mo Eisa.
