Reaction: Sercombe on Wycombe Wanderers

15 August 2021

Liam Sercombe was left frustrated that Cheltenham Town were far off their maximum potential in Saturday's home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

The midfielder felt they gave their visitors too much respect and paid the price in a game where taking chances proved to be the difference.

Speaking after the match the Robins number eight wants his teammates to back themselves more and to produce the qualities that made them such a top performing team last season in both League Two and the FA Cup.

"I think during the first half we played well and got ourselves back in the game, but in the second half we showed them a bit too much respect," he said.

"We said after the game we've got to start believing in ourselves. We were champions of League Two so it shows we were good enough to come up into this league and I feel like we should have looked to play more of our game. I think we came away from it in the second half.

"We have to stay on the front foot and play our game of passing the ball around and creating chances. We dropped off them midway through the second half and in the last 30 minutes we didn't even look like threatening them. We should be having a right go and finding a way of getting back into the game."
