Reaction: May on Gillingham

25 August 2021

Alfie May's hard work on the training ground helped him score the equaliser that took Tuesday's Carabao Cup round two victory at Gillingham to a penalty shootout.

After falling behind in the first half at Priestfield May's well-taken finish in the first half ensured the game ended level at 1-1.

It was straight to penalties and the team got the job done successfully converting all five spot kicks to seal the club's first ever place in the third round.

May was pleased his approach on the training pitches proved successful on the night, having also registered a goal in the League One fixture at Fleetwood Town last Saturday too.

"It was a tough game," he said. "We know what Gillingham do and what Steve Evans does with his teams but we're delighted to make history. I don't think Cheltenham have been in round three so it's another box ticked.

"In training I've been trying to be calm in front of goal and with that one I've just stroked it in and it was a good feeling.

"I've played here plenty of times now and not scored and it's my local club as well so it's nice to get on the score sheet."
