Revisit another crucial season in the history of Cheltenham Town with the latest episode of The Boot Zoom, featuring some of the personalities who played a key role in helping the club regain its place in the Conference.
Martin Boyle, Paul Chenoweth, Dean Clarke, Lee Howells and Darren Wright join the Gloucestershire Echo's Jon Palmer in revisiting the 1996/97 season which saw Cheltenham earn promotion back into the Conference after a five year absence.
Finishing second as runners up to Gresley, who were denied promotion due to ground grading issues, it was a season that would prove to be the first of three promotions under the management of Steve Cotterill over the space of six remarkable seasons.
Boyle, Chenoweth, Clarke, Howells and Wright all made a significant contribution to the 1996/97 campaign that came down to the final day, pipping local rivals Gloucester City to move back up out of the Southern League, and to spark a memorable surge up the English football pyramid.
