FIFA 20: Robins 2-0 Dundalk - report

25 March 2020

Luke Varney scored his second goal in as many games and Alex Addai also found the net as Cheltenham Town progressed into the last-32 of the Ultimate QuaranTeam tournament with victory over Dundalk.

Jake McAlary named an unchanged team from the side that beat Salford City in the first-round and the Irish outfit were no match for the boys in blue, who are yet to concede a goal in the competition.

After a stuttering start due to connectivity issues, both teams kept a solid defensive shape in the opening stages but patience was key and Cheltenham finally broke the deadlock when Varney fired in from close range following some neat build-up play in midfield after 36 minutes.

Scott Flinders may be recovering from injury in real life but he was in typically fine form to make a great save to keep the scores level at the start of the second half.

But the Robins had breathing space in the 65th minute when substitute Tom Nichols repaid the favour for Addai, who set him up against Salford, to tap into the net just outside the six-yard box.

The visitors fired wide late on in a desperate attempt to get back into it but McAlary's Cheltenham held on at Court Lane to progress into the third-round.

ROBINS 4-4-2: Flinders (Gk), Long, Tozer (c), Boyle, Hussey, Lloyd, Thomas, Doyle-Hayes, May (Nichols 62), Varney (Reid 62), Addai.

Subs not used: Raglan, Clements, Sheaf, Ince, Greaves.

ATTENDANCE: 8,400
