Robins reinforce goalkeeping options with Evans addition

9 January 2020

Wales under-21 international goalkeeper Owen Evans has joined Cheltenham Town on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Following a season ending injury to Scott Flinders in last week's 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic, the club have reinforced their goalkeeping options with the addition of Evans who joins the club from Championship side Wigan Athletic.

The 23-year-old has spent the first half of the season on loan at fellow League Two club Macclesfield Town where he has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Silkmen.

It will be the sixth loan spell of Evans' career. He has previously had stints in non-league football at Witton Albion, Welsh Premier League side Rhyl and with North Ferriby United and Sutton United in the National League.

He's made one first team appearance for parent club Wigan in a 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Blackpool in August 2017.

Born in Newport, he has earned international honours for Wales at under-19 and under-21 level, while in May 2019 he trained as part of Ryan Giggs senior Wales squad.

"I'm really excited to be here," Evans said. "It's been a hectic couple of days to say the least. The opportunity arose fairly quickly and I had to make tough decisions over the last couple of days and I felt like it was an opportunity that I couldn't really turn down.

"Cheltenham have been playing really well this year and it's a great club. I know of it from lads previously being here on loan so it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down and I'm really excited to get going.

"I was really appreciative of Macclesfield of giving me the chance to go in and play. As a group of lads in the changing room they couldn't have been better - week in week out they performed and worked their hardest which they easily couldn't have which is what made it a tough decision to leave because we were playing well and it was a great group of lads."

Evans has been registered and is available for Saturday's home match against Walsall at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

Tickets for the game against the Saddlers are available to buy from the ticket office on Friday between 10am and 3pm and online.

Evans player sponsorship for his home and away shirt is now available for the rest of the season. If you are interested in sponsoring the newest face to the Cheltenham squad then email luke.saunders@ctfc.com to register your interest.
