Preview: Varney on Crewe

27 September 2019

Luke Varney is relishing the prospect of taking on the club that kick-started a career in the game that has seen him play in the Premier League, as Crewe Alexandra are the visitors to the Jonny-Rocks Stadium on Saturday.

The popular forward spent four years with Saturday's opponents where his outstanding form in front of goal earned him a move to then Premier League Charlton Athletic for £2 million.

He'll be putting emotions aside this weekend though for what is a second against third clash at the Jonny-Rocks that he's been looking forward to since last Saturday's fine 2-0 win at Plymouth where he opened the scoring for Michael Duff's men.

"As soon as the Plymouth game finished I was relishing the game I must admit," Varney said.

"To get back to the Jonny-Rocks especially after the Bradford performance it is something that the lads are looking forward to.

"We need to do a lot of work on how they are playing because they've had a great start as well and scoring a lot of goals so we'll do the details and get ready for a tough game I'm sure.

"I think I saw something yesterday that apparently they're favourites which surprised me.

"We go into games with that sort of underdog mentality which has really helped us. We're just desperate to put on another good performance because I feel like if we play like we do at home we'll have a good chance of getting a positive result."
