Haynes on the under-18s FA Youth Cup tie with Eastleigh

29 October 2019

Cheltenham Town's under-18s side are in action at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium on Wednesday night in the FA Youth Cup first round and manager Pete Haynes is looking forward to seeing his side test themselves in a knockout cup competition.

Eastleigh are the visitors on Wednesday for a match that kicks off at 7pm.

Haynes' youngsters are relishing the prospect of getting their FA Youth Cup campaign underway against a young Spitfires outfit who beat Mangotsfield United in the final qualifying round to reach this stage.

"Having Portsmouth cancelled on the weekend has given us more time to focus on the game which is good," he said.

"We've been able to do more work on the grass which is nice and there's definitely a real buzz around the players.

"They always look forward to it, they're always excited. They've hit a good bit of form in terms of the way they're playing so hopefully they're peaking at a good time.

"With cup games it's who can perform well on the day, who can deal with all of the different pressures, who can perform their game in the right way to effect the oppositon better.

"I know they will come and be very competitive from the games we've watched.

"I think our players are looking forward to the fact it's a different challenge. Some of the other draws have been against teams they play week in week out that lads have played in the last six years of their academy programme.

"Whereas it was actually quite nice to get a team we haven't played before. Our lads will really embrace the challenge of not really knowing too much about Eastleigh.

"It is going to be great for them and a great experience for all of us. Fingers crossed our players are able to do what they need to do to get the win."
