Mansfield Town 4-2 Robins - report & highlights

2 March 2019

A spirited second half comeback wasn't enough for Cheltenham who suffered defeat against automatic promotion chasers Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.

Two goals down at the break, Chris Hussey and Charlie Raglan's goals had seen Michael Duff's side fight their way back into the contest, but Mansfield showed their promotion credentials by responding with a further two goals.

CJ Hamilton's brace right before half time had handed Mansfield the advantage before the break, but after Hussey and Raglan pegged the hosts back, Will Atkinson headed in to restore their lead, with Alex MacDonald's late finish the final of the afternoon's six goals.

Earlier, Jacob Maddox swung an effort over the bar in a quiet opening as the Robins adjusted well to any threats posed by the hosts lively attack.

The Stags themselves were forced into defensive duties when great work by Kevin Dawson and Hussey saw the latters cross catch out Jordan Smith before it was eventually hacked clear.

In the final minutes of the half Mansfield began to find space in behind the Robins backline. Hamilton's turn and shot from outside the box was deflected away for a corner, but the former Sheffield United youngster scored the first of his two goals shortly after.

Despite Will Boyle's attempts to hook clear from off the line, Hamilton slammed in his side's first, and he made it two as his scuffed shot caught out Scott Flinders and bobbled in.

There was almost a Mansfield third in first half stoppage time. Hamilton got clear down the left but his cross was at a difficult height for Nicky Ajose to deal with and his attempt fell wide.

With their tails up, Mansfield were straight back on their attacking surge after half time, but Flinders kept out Hamilton's effort after he was set clear, and Krystian Pearce's turn and volley was deflected wide.

Having weathered the Stags storm it was the Robins who halved the deficit just before the hour mark through Hussey. His terrific free kick drifted over the Mansfield wall and saw him net his first goal for the club.

And the left sider then set up the Robins leveller. His corner kick delivery was met by Raglan in the box who nodded in to draw parity.

The home crowd fell silent, but they were on their feet again when they managed to retake the lead. Another flurry of chances saw them test Flinders with Jorge Grant first producing a shot the goalkeeper saved well with his feet, and then Jacob Mellis' hit was kept out.

But from the subsequent corner kick it was Atkinson who stooped low in the box to head in from close range to undo Cheltenham's hard work.

And they would go onto once again install a two goal gap between the sides when substitute Alex MacDonald was sent through and he calmly slotted to cement the Stags win.
