Reaction: Duff on Burnley under-23s

27 July 2019

Michael Duff felt final home pre-season friendly opponents Burnley under-23s wanted the game more than his side following a 3-2 loss to the Premier League youngsters.

Despite a Luke Varney brace, Duff's former side at Turf Moor claimed victory in the final run out at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium ahead of the next League Two season, that begins next weekend.

"I was disappointed that every time the ball went in our box one of them headed it and not us," Duff said post-match.

"They've had three shots on target in the game. You don't expect an academy team to be physically better than us in the box which tells me it was just the mentality.

"Generally we're pretty good at those sorts of things. We're a big team, nine of our players are over six foot, and they just wanted it more than us.

"There was a little bit of the lads taking liberties because they thought it was only an under-23s team but they're not bad, they had a right go, and the three goals have come from balls in our box - so the league that we play in, we need to do that better.

"No one got injured, which was the key, we looked quite fit but there's lots to work on."

Duff will be taking part in a fans forum with supporters at the club's Open Day on Sunday. It takes place at the Energy Check Training Ground on Quat Goose Lane in Swindon Village between 11am and 1pm. For more details click here
