Report: Robins 1, Leicester City 2

20 July 2019

Cheltenham Town pushed Premier League Leicester City all the way in this afternoon's friendly, narrowly losing at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

The Robins had led the former Champions for almost an hour here after Luke Varney had given his side an early lead with a perfect header.

But the Foxes, who put out two different teams in each half, scored in quick succession through Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton in the closing stages to claim the win on the day.

There were plenty of positives as Michael Duff's side continue their preparations for the season ahead.

They looked well drilled and defensively sound, although they'll be disappointed with the goals they conceded. Overall it was a creditable effort in front of a bumper summer crowd of almost four thousand.

Scott Flinders was called into an early save to deny Kelechi Iheanacho the first goal, claimed in the end by Varney with 16 minutes on the clock when he rose to meet Sean Long's diagonal ball from the right with a perfect downward header.

George Thomas and Wes Morgan had a couple of chances apiece but Flinders wasn't really troubled as the former Champions struggled to break down Michael Duff's men.

Leicester's best chance of the half fell to Iheanacho 10 minutes before the break, Callum Elder crossing from the left but the former Manchester City striker miscued his header wide of the target.

The Premier League side rang the changes at the break, changing their entire outfield team but again the Robins stuck to their task and more than matched their loftier opponents.

They had restricted the Foxes for 23 minutes of the second half until former England international Vardy got his side back on terms, slotting home past Flinders after Youri Tielemans centred from the right.

The Robins were then forced into an extended spell of defending after the goal and Albrighton made it two 15 minutes from time, racing onto Nampalys Mendy's threaded ball and rounding Flinders to stab home from a tight angle.
