FPA: 1999 Conference title winner David Norton returns for Tranmere match

9 January 2019

This weekend the Cheltenham Town Former Players Association will welcome back utility man David Norton, who played an integral role in the club's first ever promotion to the Football League in 1999.

A popular figure during his spell in Gloucestershire, Norton played in many positions and was an essential part of the title winning team under Steve Cotterill.

Passionate midfielder Norton, who played on the right wing and filled in at right back on a few occassions, was with the Robins for just one season in 1998/99 after arriving on a free transfer from relegated Hereford United.

But he made a big impact in that short time and helped his new club go up, making 46 starts and scoring three times - endearing himself to supporters due to his determined and hard-working performances.

The Aston Villa product was however unable to make the step up to the Third Division with Cheltenham and went on to join Yeovil Town for the turn of the century.

Norton will be back at the club on Saturday as this week's guest and you can catch his exclusive interview with the FPA's very own Mike Davis early next week.

Please be sure to give our returning Conference title winning hero a warm welcome 'home' as the Robins take on Tranmere Rovers in Sky Bet League Two (3pm kick-off).
