Billy Waters returns to Cheltenham

11 January 2019

Cheltenham Town can announce that Billy Waters, a member of the 2015-16 Conference title winning squad, has re-joined the club on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The attacker returns to the Jonny-Rocks Stadium on an agreement that sees him transfer from Sky Bet League Two counterparts Northampton Town where he has been a regular for the Cobblers in the current campaign.

Waters was the 2016-17 Player of the Season winner at Cheltenham and in his first spell at the club made 71 appearances in all competitions – scoring 27 goals in that time.

His 16 goals on the Robins return to the Football League in the 2016-17 season captured the attention of clubs from a higher level and he would leave Gloucestershire to sign a permanent deal at then League One Northampton – agreeing a three-year contract.

He had previously been a part of the 2015-16 squad that triumphed as Conference National winners – earning an immediate return to the Football League following relegation having been one of an entire starting XI at Lincoln City on the opening day of the season to make their debuts.

Now the Crewe Alexandra youth product is back at the club and is all set to make his second debut in a Robins shirt when Tranmere Rovers are the visitors on Saturday.

Commenting on his return to Cheltenham Waters said: “I'm absolutely buzzing. It feels really good to be back. It seems not a lot has changed but at the same time a lot has.

"I can't wait to get going again. I had a sense of coming home when I drove into Cheltenham this morning.

"I got a little bit of a buzz back in the stomach. There was other interest but when this one came up I just thought yes that's the one. I got a few butterflies in the stomach and it's really nice to be back."

Waters will wear shirt number 21 during his loan spell.

Keep an eye on the club website and social media for his first interview since returning to the club soon.
