Full-time: Oldham Athletic 2, Robins 0 – highlights, report and reaction from Boundary Park

23 October 2018

Ten-man Cheltenham Town slipped to defeat at Oldham Athletic as boss Michael Duff's search for a first win continues.

The game was eventually decided by a couple of late goals by Jonathan Benteke and Callum Lang.

The Robins' cause wasn't helped on the stroke of half-time when Sam Jones was dismissed following an altercation with Oldham's Jose Baxter in front of the dugouts.

Cheltenham were already under the cosh when he clashed with the Latics striker, leaving Duff's side with an uphill battle after the break.

But they defended manfully despite the numerical disadvantage, frustrating the home side until the 75th minute when Benteke finally made the breakthorugh.

Lang went on to seal victory deep into added on time on another frustrating evening.

Duff made a couple of changes to the side that claimed a point in the derby four days ago.

Kevin Dawson picked up a knee injury in the opening exchanges at the New Lawn and was replaced by Chris Clements here, while Tyrone Barnett dropped to the bench after collecting a dead leg while scoring the goal that earned the Robins a share of the spoils.

That meant Jones came in for his second league start in attack alongside Luke Varney but it was tough night for the forwards with the home side dominating possession, especially after the Robins were reduced to ten men.

Baxter was in the thick of it in the opening exchanges. He shot narrowly wide from 18 yards, was denied a shooting chance by a fine interception by Will Boyle and saw a clever effort held by Scott Flinders in the opening quarter of an hour.

Cheltenham's first real effort arrived with 29 minutes on the clock, Chris Hussey swinging in a free-kick from the left and Will Boyle glancing a header a foot wide of the right post.

Flinders was called into a low save to deny Gevaro Nepomunceno five minutes before the interval, then George Edmundson put a header just wide.

The Robins' task got a lot harder when Jones was shown red as the opening 45 minutes drew to a close.

The forward had lunged in on Christoper Missilou, collecting the game's first caution in the process but as he got to his feet he was involved in a melee on the touchline in front of the dugouts and clashed with Baxter.

The referee had no hesitation in brandishing a red card and it meant that Cheltenham were forced into a rearguard action throughout the second half as Oldham pressed for the opening goal.

Callum Lang and substitute Ishmael Miller, the former Manchester City forward, saw shots blocked while Nepomunceno called Flinders into a fine flying stop with a curling effort from the right.

Varney fashioned a rare shooting chance 19 minutes from time, but the experienced striker dragged it a foot wide of the left upright.

But the home side made the decisive breakthrough 15 minutes from time through another replacement, Benteke, who touched home Rob Hunt's low delivery from the left to grab all the points for the promotion hopefuls.

They added their second deep into added on time, Lang beating Flinders with a low effort from 16 yards to seal victory.
