Champions among released list

10 May 2018

Three members of Cheltenham Town’s 2015/16 National League Championship squad are among those who have not been offered new contracts at the Sky Bet League Two club.

Jordan Cranston, Dan Holman and Danny Wright, who all played important roles in the promotion season, are among those released following conclusion of the 2017/18 season.

Cranston joined the Robins for a transfer fee from Gateshead in January 2016 while Holman arrived around the same time from Colchester United. Both players gave the team a significant boost during the second half of the title-winning season with Holman bagging 16 goals in 18 starts.

Danny Wright was signed in the summer of 2015 and was one of 11 players handed a first team debut on the opening day of the season. He went on to be named supporters player of the year and finished top scorer with 25 goals in all competitions.

These departures, along with the transfer of Harry Pell to Colchester United, leave understudy goalkeeper Rhys Lovett as the only member of the championship squad still with the club.

Other players who have not been made offers for next season are Jamie Grimes, Josh Thomas, Adam Page and Sanmi Odelusi, while short-term signing Jaanai Gordon’s contract expired in January and he has been undergoing injury rehab at Cheltenham Town. Finally, Aaron Downes, captain during the championship season, has now retired from playing and will concentrate on his role as Head of Academy Coaching.

The club would like to thank all those players for their efforts during their time at the LCI Rail Stadium and wish them the very best of luck for the future.

Director and club secretary Paul Godfrey stated: “I hate this time of year because you have to say goodbye to players who have given the club great service and whom you have worked with closely.

“All our former players are always welcome back at the club and members of the championship squad in particular will hold a very space place in the memories of Robins fans for many years to come.

“Personally I will always treasure Dan Holman’s four goal demolition of his former club Woking and Danny Wright’s two late goals at Dover Athletic. Those are the kind of key performances upon which championships are built and we will forever be grateful to those players.”

Offers of new contracts have been made to Carl Winchester and Jerell Sellars. The club will inform supporters of any further developments in due course.

Cheltenham Town would also like to thank Joe Morrell, Taylor Moore, Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, Joe Rodon, Jake Andrews, Manny Onriase and Elijah Adebayo for their efforts during their respective loans, as they return to their parent clubs.

All remaining professional players are under contract with the club for next season.
