Gaffer pleased with quality and character of recruits

18 June 2018

Manager Gary Johnson has targeted making a few more additions to his playing squad before the players return for pre-season training at the end of the month.

The Robins have had a busy close season with seven new recruits – Alex Addai, Ben Tozer, Chris Hussey, Conor Thomas, Johnny Mullins, Ryan Broom and Tom Smith.

And Johnson has been thrilled with both the quality and character of the players he had been able to secure as he builds a new-look squad.

“You’re always very pleased when your targets come to fruition and you know that when they have come in early - you haven’t had to wait for your third or fourth choice,” he said.

“I’m pleased with the quality but also the character and the personality of the boys we have signed. I’ve known a few of them from previous clubs and some of them have been recommended as both players and people.

“It is good to get the bulk of your group in nice and early. We start pre-season on June 28 and it will be good to have the group together.

“We needed to bring in more experience, in terms of both games and promotions. They are people who have been there and done it, who can push you through when we need it.

“At times last year I was just as frustrated as everyone else, there were times when we looked a play-off team. But we were inconsistent, we could also get beat in the same month. We had good and bad in each month.

“We needed that balance, experience and young ones who want to learn. They have all given me that hope that we are going to give it a right go.

“We had to improve our defensive side of things – we let in miles too many goals, 20 too many.

“We scored enough goals and Mo (Eisa) had a fantastic season. Danny Wright and Brian Graham got a few between them too. But the goals we let in was our Achilles heel.

“We have changed most of that now and bought in experience of players who have defended well in promotion winning teams.

“There will definitely be a few more – there are another one or two on the horizon,” he added. “I know people have asked where is out right back, well I’m hoping to sign one pretty soon.

“I’ve got to get a big enough squad to get people in the right positions and where they enjoy it most.”
