Skipper Winchester 'gutted' to leave empty-handed

20 January 2018

Captain Carl Winchester admitted he was left ‘gutted’ by the late defeat to Mansfield Town – but was quick to praise the fighting spirit shown by the Robins throughout a difficult afternoon at the One Call Stadium.

Harry Pell and Elijah Adebayo found the net in the Sky Bet League Two clash but Cheltenham – who had Taylor Moore and Danny Wright sent off – were defeated as the home side snatched an injury time winner.

"There were a lot of ups and downs in the game," admitted Winchester.

"We battled and played well. We are all gutted and disappointed not to come away with three points.

"We showed a lot of fighting spirit and need to take that into next week.

"Even when we went down to ten men we still created chances. We dug in and always knew it would be a battle here.

"It can be cruel, but that is football for you. We have a home game with Barnet now to look forward to.”

Winchester also revealed his pride at being handed the captain’s armband adding: "It was brilliant and thanks to the gaffer for letting me lead the team out.

"It was nice to play in midfield, but I will happily do a job at right back. As long as I am in the team I am happy.”
