Gaffer praise as bench impact secures point

27 January 2018

Gary Johnson praised the impact of Cheltenham Town’s bench as the Robins battled back to draw 1-1 with Barnet at The LCI Rail Stadium.

Ricardo Santos put the Bees ahead after just two minutes but Mo Eisa’s equaliser in the 65th minute ensured that the Robins earned a point.

“From where we were at 1-0 down early on it’s a point gained,” said Johnson.

“We didn’t start well and to be fair to them they did start well, they have got a couple of quick lads in their team and we couldn’t clear our lines.”

“I had to address that at half-time and make sure that we got into their end a little more to give us a chance.”

Johnson brought on strikers Brian Graham and Elijah Adebayo at half-time, and the Cheltenham boss was pleased with the impact they made.

“I didn’t feel the game was going to change much unless I changed the personnel, and that’s what we did by putting three lads up front,” he said.

“I thought they worked hard to try and create openings and we certainly put them under pressure.”

Loan signing Adebayo assisted Eisa’s 14th goal of the season, and Johnson is happy with how the-20-year-old settling in at the club, alongside the other January signings.

“Elijah is going to be a good player, just like all the younger lads they need to see it, feel it and then be a part of it,” said Johnson.

“I didn’t really want to bring Ilias off because he was going well but he got cramp at around the same point last week, so I didn’t want to lose him for the next few games.

“I’m pleased that the lads who have just come in are getting better and you can see why it is that we brought them in.”
