Gaffer: We must be ready for the best of Carlisle

16 August 2018

Manager Gary Johnson has warned his Robins to be prepared to face a fired-up Carlisle side when they visit the Jonny-Rocks Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Cheltenham are back in Sky Bet League Two action after a confidence boosting win over Colchester United in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Johnson’s men face a Carlisle side that arrive on the back of a 5-1 defeat to Blackburn in the cup and without a league win after two games.

However, Johnson knows the Cumbrians will be out to keep the Robins without a league win of their own.

He said: “We have to make sure we are ready for the best of Carlisle, as opposed to the worst.

“They still have some decent players and we have to be focused and do our job.

“We need to make sure we play our game against them and not wait for their game to come out because they are angry after being beaten by Blackburn.

“We have to be careful there because they are a decent side and it should be another good football match.”

Johnson is also hopeful his side will take the momentum from the cup back into the league adding: “It's always nice to win a game, however you win it.

“We are in the next round of the Carabao Cup so that's always nice and I am sure the lads will have a smile on their face, even though we let a two goal lead slip.

“It was a cup game so the opposition are going to go for it anyway at the end. I think it'll help with confidence and more people will see a little bit more of what we have in the squad.

“I thought a few of the lads showed their good game, if you like. They have a great game, but we have to make sure they bring that out soon.

“It's typical of a new group trying to gel and it's about working out who is on form and who is not on form and which group of 11 do you pick as some train really well, but haven't quite done in the games.

“But it is early days and hopefully it'll help us kick on and go into the next couple of league games with a bit of confidence.”
