Preview: Exeter V Robins

1 April 2018

Cheltenham Town make the Bank Holiday Monday trip to Devon to face Exeter City at St James Park in Sky Bet League Two (kick-off 3pm).

The Robins are looking to return to winnings ways after the club’s five game unbeaten run came to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Carlisle United at the LCI Rail Stadium on Good Friday.

The Grecians also started the Easter weekend with defeat – a 3-2 loss to Lincoln City – and will be keen to get a result as they chase a promotion spot.

Exeter are currently fifth in the table and only five points behind third placed Wycombe with a game in hand.

When then teams met earlier in the season a pulsating encounter ended 4-3 to the Grecians at the LCI Rail Stadium.

The Opposition:

Exeter Manager Paul Tisdale was in a positive mood despite Exeter City's 3-2 defeat to promotion rivals Lincoln City on Good Friday.

Lincoln’s Ollie Palmer won it for the hosts late on, leaving Tisdale to draw on the positives of the performance, if not the result.

“I really enjoyed the game, terribly disappointed to have lost but we played really well,” he said. “It was a cracking game of football that could have gone either way and there’s plenty of games to go.

“I wanted to win that game as much as anybody but it was a cracking performance from our lads with players missing – even changes half an hour before kick-off with illness, Troy Archibald-Henville was sick, we had quite a few players who were sick, he was too unwell, so we had to make changes at that point.

“I thought we played really, really well and I’m leaving here very upbeat really, because the players responded every step of the way to what happened.

“It’s this stage of the season, there’s no excuses, there’s no feeling sorry for yourself – I don’t feel sorry for myself, I saw a team play really well, battle, play its football and compete,” he added.

“We won lots of set pieces and challenged against a very good team, okay they won the game but they’ve just shaded it – it could have gone our way, it didn’t.

“We came off the pitch really disappointed, our supporters clapped us off, the vast majority of them really pleased with what they saw, and that gives me more energy and confidence going into the next game, so come on, let’s get ready for Monday.”

Team News:

Cheltenham team news: Manager Gary Johnson has no new injury concerns but could recall midfielder Harry Pell to the starting line-up after illness ruled him out from the start against Carlisle United.
