Legends and jockeys draw in charity match for IJF

18 April 2018

Cheltenham Town Legends and AP McCoy’s XI played out an entertaining draw in a charity match in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) at the home of the Robins on Wednesday evening.

Stars from the past lined up for the legends team to face 20-time champion jockey McCoy and his team of jockeys at the LCI Rail Stadium.

The game ended 2-2 but the real winner was the IJF who will benefit from all the money raised in the night.

In warm weather, the legends started brightly and opened the scoring when Damian Spencer latched onto a through ball and fired low past Steve Book.

AP McCoy’s XI – that were managed on the night by Kevin Dawson, Brian Graham and Danny Wright – levelled when Jamie Bargary turned home a header from Aaron Downes.

Alex Russell, for the legends, and Bargary, for the jockeys, both went close at the start of the second half while Love Island star Chris Hughes was also introduced.

Darren Byfield thought he was the match winner when he tucked home from close range after Robbie Dunne rattled the bar with a rising shot.

But a late twist saw John Brough head home in the final seconds to ensure the game ended all square.
