Versatile Winchester enjoying new role

22 September 2017

Versatile Carl Winchester admits he is relishing his new role in the Cheltenham Town team – and has spoken about his blossoming partnership with Kevin Dawson down the right flank.

Northern Ireland ace Winchester, 24, has occupied the right back role for much of the Sky Bet League Two season with the Robins.

Cheltenham have certainly been boosted by the Irish connection down the right side of the field with Winchester linking up impressively with Kevin Dawson.

“I have really clicked with Dawes (Kevin Dawson) this season,” said Belfast–born Winchester. “We get on really well away from football too and have linked up well.

“From playing against him at Yeovil I knew him well, and playing here we have clicked quickly.

“I will do a job anywhere on the pitch,” added Winchester. “I’m enjoying playing right back and I’ve played there before with Oldham so I know what it takes.

“It helps getting a run of games in one position, you get focussed and work on it at the training ground.”

Winchester is hoping to be involved as the Robins fly north to Lancashire to face Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

And he is keen for the team to finally record an away win after recent promising performances against Yeovil and Newport on their travels.

He said: “Accrington are doing really in the league so it will be a tough place to go. We need to get that away win, it is important to us, and the mood has been good this week.

“We’re looking forward to testing ourselves against a top three team in the league.”
