REPORT: Cheltenham 3-0 Mansfield

26 September 2017

Brian Graham and Joe Morrell scored their first goals for Cheltenham Town as the Robins turned on the style to stun Mansfield Town with a scintillating display at the LCI Rail Stadium.

Graham rose highest to loop home a header from a free kick from Joe Morrell before the young midfielder capped his man-of-the-match show by sweeping home a 25-yard strike into the bottom corner.

Danny Wright scored four minutes from the end, firing home after being set free by Jerell Sellars, and it could have been even more for the home side with Dan O’Shaughnessy and Harry Pell both striking the frame of the goal.

The Robins had not beaten the Stags at home since 2004 - but that unwanted record was blown apart as Cheltenham start to look up the table after three games undefeated.

Cheltenham had made two changes to the starting line-up with the fit-again Kyle Storer replacing Nigel Atangana in midfield and O’Shaughnessy coming in for Jordan Cranston, who missed the game when his partner went into labour.

The Robins started much the brighter as Mo Eisa fed a ball through to strike partner Brian Graham, but he lifted his shot high over both goalkeeper and crossbar.

Cheltenham were playing some incisive attacking football in the opening ten minutes, but a lightening quick break from Mansfield showed their danger as Danny Rose freed Lee Angol who saw his shot saved by Scott Flinders.

The lively Jacob Mellis then burst through in midfield and again released Angol on the right side of the penalty area, but this time his shot was blocked by a retreating O’Shaughnessy.

Mansfield were slowly growing into the game with Rose shooting across goal after some slick build-up play.

The Stags’ growing confidence was summed up by Paul Anderson’s ambitious 40-yard dipping shot that landed on the roof of Flinders’ net after Cheltenham had scrambled another aerial bombardment away.

However, it was the home side that came closest just moments before the break when Dawson’s cross was headed on the post by O’Shaughnessy before the offside flag denied Grimes' flicked finish as he tucked home Graham's cross.

The second half turned out to be a simply stunning display of flowing attacking football from the Robins, who broke through the visiting rearguard when Eisa won a free kick on the edge of the area and Graham did the rest as he looped his header over Logan.

Carl Winchester almost doubled the lead two minutes later when he hit a rising shot over the bar after dancing past two tacklers.

Morrell came close to adding another, when he skipped onto a return pass from Kyle Storer only to be denied by Logan, before he did score a quite stunning second when he picked the ball up and curled it home from range.

Visiting manager Steve Evans was sent to the stands by the officials before Pell nearly scored a peach of a third - hitting the righthand post after chesting the ball down and unleashing a half volley from the edge of the penalty area.

The now under-siege Logan denied Eisa once more with his foot, after more neat build-up play, but he could do little as the home side capped the display when Sellars passed to Wright who stroked it home to spark wild celebrations.
