Downes, Storer & Wright to remain with the Robins

19 May 2017

Reaction from the players and Gary

We are pleased to announce that Aaron Downes, Kyle Storer and Danny Wright will remain with the Robins for another year.

All three men joined the club in the summer of 2015 and helped restore our our Football League status at the first time of asking.

The Gaffer Gary Johnson commented, "Stoz and Wrighty were two of the first to commit themselves to the club after being offered a contract. They'd agreed very early on and I'm pleased that all of the forms are now signed and they'll both be with us for another year.

"Danny, for a first season in the EFL after many years outside of it, proved his goal scoring prowess with 11 goals. He had a fantastic work rate, even at his age! There's still work to do but it's mainly just making sure he's got confidence which I'm he will. Next season can only be better.

"Kyle played in a lot of games that we got results in. That is no coincidence. He was unlucky to be suspended a couple of times. Some say unlucky some say stupid but he also proved that he can effect a game at EFL level. They are two players who help lead this team, one who leads by example in Danny and one who is a leader and great talker in Kyle, he's a great vice-captain.

"I'm also pleased to announce that we're keeping the experience and leadership of Aaron Downes at the club. Keeping these three means we keep our identity and DNA for another year. They know the culture of our club and will encourage other players to adhere to our training and philosophy."

Downes added, "I'm obviously very happy to stay on at Cheltenham. Me and my wife have grown very fond of the area and the fans. I'm also grateful to the Gaffer & Chairman for keeping their belief in me. I'm really looking forward to the season ahead and imparting my experience onto our very good players that we have in the squad as well as helping the team and the squad to be successful."

Kyle and Danny both made their EFL debuts last season and are looking forward to taking on the challenge again come August.

Storer said, "I was delighted to be offered another contract. I can't wait to have another crack at the league after working so hard to get there.

"I missed games this year but managed to establish myself in the team towards the end. This year I'll be able to have a full go at it! I really appreciate all of the support I've been given over these two years and can't wait to play in front of them all again."

Danny, who helped us to surprise the first 'Join Our Squad' prize winner last week, is keen to get back playing again, "Of course I was delighted to agree a new extension with the club. I can't wait for next season now. We want to put a few things right and will learn from last year.

"My experience so far is that this is a fantastic club to play for. The players, staff and fans are close-knit and I'm so happy to be staying. It was great to surprise Alan last week and it's great to see so many fans joining our squad. Hopefully we can hit our target and become stronger as a club. I'm just ready to kick on now!
