REPORT: Carlisle 3-0 Cheltenham

19 August 2017

Cheltenham Town's search for an elusive league win in Cumbria continues after this afternoon's 3-0 defeat at Carlisle United's Brunton Park.

This was the club's 11th league trip to League Two's most northerly outpost since joining the league in 1999 and once again, they returned without a win.

All the damage was done in the opening 22 minutes, the home side netting two to give the Robins a mountain to climb before they had a chance to settle into the game.

You know it’s going to be a tough afternoon when Harry Pell turns one into his own net in the opening minutes, while Reggie Lambe doubled the Cumbrian’s advantage before the midway point of the opening 45 minutes.

Tom Miller added the third on the hour to complete a forgettable afternoon for the 122 travelling fans who had made the longest trip of the season.

Johnson had made one change to his side, bringing in Nigel Atangana for Jerell Sellars who had pulled up with hamstring injury last weekend.

He took his place in central midfield alongside Kyle Storer, with Pell (on the right) and Carl Winchester (left) in the wide areas of a 4-4-2 shape.

Cheltenham made the worse possible start, conceding as early as the fifth minute after an unfortunate moment for Pell.

Danny Grainger swung in a corner to the back post, Shaun Miller nodded it in and the midfielder poked it into the roof of the net from six yards.

Things went from bad to worse 13 minutes later when Lambe glanced a header home, Grainger once again the supplier from the Carlisle left.

The Robins first sight of goal arrived after 22 minutes when Mo Eisa pulled one back into the path of Atangana, who tested Jack Bonham from 20 yards but the Cumbrian number one held it comfortably.

Tom Miller almost made it three midway through the first half, rising above Jordon Forster to head over from close range and Johnson’s side survived an almighty goalmouth scramble on the half-hour mark.

That’s the way it stayed until the break and it was Cheltenham who created the first chance of the second half, Storer picking out Boyle with a corner from the right but the Yorkshireman headed it a foot over.

Johnson switched it around approaching the hour, bringing on Brian Graham to replace Carl Winchester in a 4-3-3 formation but almost as soon as the new striker took up position, Cheltenham had shipped a third.

It was Tom Miller who grabbed it, finding the top corner with a measured finish after Lambe had teed him up from the right.

Kevin Dawson was thrown into action shortly afterwards at the expense of Harry Pell, and there was a late Football League debut for Matt Bower in place of Will Boyle, but the changes had little effect on the outcome of the game.

Carlisle substitute Hallam Hope rattled the crossbar in the closing moments of the game,
