Boss calls for mental strength in Exeter clash

25 August 2017

Boss Gary Johnson believes his players must stay mentally strong as they prepare for a key double header on home soil.

The Robins face a crunch Sky Bet League Two clash with high-flying Exeter City at the LCI Rail Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Seven days later the team are again in home action as Stevenage visit and Johnson acknowledges Cheltenham must remain focused after the highs of the West Ham fixture as they continue a busy month of football.

"It's been a short turnaround (since West Ham), but we have had to keep the players going mentally," he said.

"We have looked at Exeter and we know they are a decent football team. They are up the top of the table and have had a good start after a few games.

"We have got two back-to-back home league games that can be good for us and we need to pick up some points.

"The boys have got to be mentally ready after what happened in the week. We have got to go beyond the call of duty to make sure we are fighting and we are in this game."

Johnson and his men pushed Premier League giants West Ham all the way on Wednesday night under the lights and in front of a big crowd at the LCI Rail Stadium.

And he is hoping a passionate home support can again play its part when the Grecians come to town.

He said: "We enjoyed the West Ham game, we enjoyed the publicity. I hope we now get another good crowd in and I know the ones who are there will be very supportive.

"The big motivation is three points and that is what we have got to go and get," he added. "The players are professional footballers and I am not going to let them use the excuse of being tired.

"We've got to put in the same effort we did against West Ham, but we need a little bit more intent to score a goal. We've got to make sure we put that in our game."
