FOCUS ON: Grimsby Town

16 April 2017

A look at Monday's opponents

This Easter Monday sees us host Grimsby Town in another important League Two fixture.

They were promoted into the Football League with us this season after beating Forest Green Rovers in the National League play off final, and have had a solid campaign.

The Mariners are currently sat 14th in the table on 58 points, following 16 wins, 10 draws and 16 losses from their 42 matches.

They’ve recently appointed Russell Slade as their new manager after Marcus Bignot was sacked last week, and he won his first game in charge as they beat Cambridge 2-1 on Friday.

It’s Slade’s second spell in charge of Grimsby after he had previously managed them between 2004 and 2006, and it’s his fourth job in the space of a year.

He left Cardiff last summer and took over at Charlton, but was relieved of his duties in November with the club in 15th place. He then joined Coventry in December, but got sacked in March after three wins from 16 games despite helping to guide the club to the Checkatrade Trophy final.

Grimsby’s top scorer for the season was Omar Bogle, but he was snapped up by Championship side Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window, meaning Sam Jones has the most goals out of anyone in the current squad with 6 strikes after he joined from Gateshead on deadline day.

We’ve already played them once this season, back in October, as a Billy Waters goal helped us record a 1-0 win at Blundell Park.

Overall we’ve faced Grimsby eight times since 2004, winning three, drawing two and losing three.
