Academy Report- Portsmouth U18 0-3 Cheltenham Town U18

9 October 2016

Great form continues

Cheltenham Town U18's won for a third consecutive game after three second half goals helped secure victory at Portsmouth in the EFL Youth Alliance Southwest Division. Man of the match Taylor Cordell, Ben Hailwood and James Hancocks all netted in a frantic ten minute spell shortly after the interval as the young Robins came out on top in a thrilling encounter at Furze Lane.

After an even first half, Cheltenham were quick out of the blocks to go ahead in the 51st minute as full back Taylor Cordell rifled a shot from the right hand side of the penalty area into the top corner.

Ben Hailwood then doubled the visitors lead when he capitalised on a Portsmouth defensive error just a minute later. Cheltenham Town were in the ascendency and added a third just after the hour mark as James Hancocks finished well at the far post. As the game settled down, Robins' goalkeeper Lewis Clayton rounded off a commanding display, saving an 87th minute penalty low to his right.

That save ensured Ashley Hopkins' side left with a clean sheet as well as three points and the U18's manager was understandably very pleased with the result. "What a win. What a game. What a performance", said Hopkins.

"This was a complete performance from front to back, we were imperious, dominating every face of a game played at breakneck speed. It was an unforgettable second half, we blew Portsmouth away with a display of such passion and poise", he added.

"I am thoroughly enjoying working with Antoine Thompson (Academy Manager) and all the staff at CTFC, it's great to see the lads smiling in training and enjoying being part of a great environment".

Cheltenham Town U18's will be hoping to continue their good run of form when they host AFC Bournemouth next Saturday.
