Cheltenham v Crewe

27 August 2016

REPORT: Cheltenham Town 2-0 Crewe Alexandra

A stellar first half performance from Cheltenham Town was enough to see off Crewe. Goals from Rob Dickie and James Dayton were enough to do the damage.

One change was made heading into the game with Dickie, Cheltenham's first goalscorer, replacing Suliman. Downes and Barthram were also on the bench.

Harry Pell's effort skidded across the turf but it was no problem for 'keeper Garratt. Waters also went close with a curling effort that landed just wide of the post, it was an encouraging start from Cheltenham.

The deadlock was broken when Dayton's low corner was turned home by returning loan hero Rob Dickie.

It was 2-0 soon after, as provider turned scorer. Dayton seized upon Hollands' poor pass and smashed home for his first of the season.

It was Cheltenham's relentless pressing which led to the goal, something that will very much please Gary Johnson.

Crewe brought on Jones for Cooper to try and get into the game, with the Robins continuing to dominate. The industrious Waters nearly made it three but his effort was tipped over, only for the offside flag to be raised anyway.

Crewe's efforts to get back into the game were being stopped well by the Cheltenham back three. A corner the best they could muster was easily dealt with by Dickie.

Lowe teed up Kiwomya whose shot was well wide, with Crewe now really threatening the Griffiths after a flurry of corners.

Crewe continued their high pressure, with the last 30 minutes making for nervy viewing. Cheltenham's only attacks were limited to counters.

However, Cheltenham held on brilliantly and recorded their first win and clean sheet of the season. A superb effort.
