Accrington Stanley v Cheltenham Town

20 February 2015

Full-time: Accrington 1, Robins 1

Accrington Stanley 1 Cheltenham Town 1

Russell Milton picked up his first point as Cheltenham Town boss as a run of four straight defeats for the Robins was ended at Accrington Stanley on Friday night.

On-loan Bristol City winger Wes Burns gave Milton's men the lead in the 31st minute nodding in after a short corner routine saw Matt Richards exchange passes with Eliot Richards and cross from the right.

Until that point, Cheltenham had been forced to soak up pressure from the home side, who included ex-Robins striker Terry Gornell and were chasing their third straight victory.

Milton made two changes from the side beaten 2-1 at home by Bury last Saturday, with Jordan Wynter and Joe Hanks replacing Kane Ferdinand and Zack Kotwica. It was a 4-5-1 formation from kick-off, with the first intention to remain solid and difficult to break down, stemming the flow of goals leaked in recent weeks.

Cheltenham remained ahead at the break and with Burns enjoying much success down the right flank, they started the second half in confident mood.

But all their good work was undone in the 59th minute when substitute Seamus McCartan levelled for Stanley. He had only been on the pitch three minutes when he got on the end of Piero Mingoia’s cross and beat Trevor Carson with a low shot from 12 yards.

Gerardo Bruna and Josh Windass went close to snatching a winner for the home side, who finished strongly, but the 139 travelling fans had a point to celebrate and Milton has something to build on ahead of next Saturday's vital home match against Tranmere Rovers.
