FULL-TIME: AFC Wimbledon 3 Cheltenham Town 1

Cheltenham Town rounded off their pre-season friendlies with a 3-1 defeat at League Two AFC Wimbledon.

Boss Gary Johnson wanted the final match before the Vanarama National League campaign to be a tough examination of his new-look team and Neal Ardley's Dons did not disappoint.

They were 2-0 up at half-time, scoring in the second minute and the first minute of time added on at the end of the first half.

Adebayo Akinfenwa added another with five minutes left, before Danny Wright netted Cheltenham's consolation with the last kick of the game.

Wimbledon were far more physical than any of the other teams Cheltenham have faced this summer and they showed their set piece prowess immediately.

A challenge from Aaron Downes resulted in a corner being given, when the ball appeared to come off the attacking player, but George Francomb's ball in was powered home by defender Paul Robinson, on trial with the Dons having left Portsmouth on Friday.

Harry Pell headed at James Shea in the 11th minute, but there was nothing else to trouble the home goalkeeper and Cheltenham's defence were worked hard by Akinfenwa, the towering Tom Elliott and Lyle Taylor.

Taylor has been scoring goals on a regular basis in pre-season and he fired in the second, turning sharply on the edge of the box and beating Dillon Phillips with a fine finish into the bottom right corner.

Cheltenham came out with far more fight in the second half and suddenly Shea was a much busier man.  JJ Hooper replaced the fit again Amari Morgan-Smith at the break and the trialist was involved heavily in some of the best attacking moves.

There was no breakthrough for the Robins however, and after a mix-up between Daniel Parslow and Phillips, Akinfenwa was presented with a simple tap in.

Cheltenham's 38 travelling fans did have something to celebrate at the end, when Pell set up Wright who thumped a shot past Shea to register his third goal of pre-season.
