VIDEO: Gary Johnson after the 3-1 home win over Cambridge United

14 April 2015

Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson after the 3-1 home win over Cambridge United:

That was a fantastic performance by the lads. As you know I’ve been pushing and shoving for that sort of performance and we needed to put on a performance that looked like we were attacking with intent that was exactly what they gave.

The crosses they put in, we scored three and were unlucky with another three or four. We should have had a goal, they’ve shown it on Sky, maybe we should have had a penalty for a handball decision that should have gone our way. That was a proper football club there, a football team trying to play and the crowd getting behind them because they knew that they were giving them 100 per cent.

But not just effort they were giving them quality today and I think a few of them in there have lived up to their past reputation. Because today some of them looked like they were in their prime, i’m really pleased we’ve got them to this level pretty quick and proud that they all got man of the match, which is unusual but a nice little touch.

When Danny (Haynes) is on form and he’s confident and things are going well for him then he is a player; he’s unplayable. The others showed that they were unplayable, Shaun Harrad had a great start up there, Manny Manset had a great start- that’s how he used to play when he had his big time at Hereford scoring goals.

We just looked a force. (Matt) Richards and (Matt) Sparrow in the middle they showed their experience. (Matt) Taylor and Troy (Brown) and the full-backs and Trev Carson at the back, I’ve got to go through them all because they really showed what they’ve got in them, it was just the mentality I had to get out, three heart attacks later I’ve got it out of them.
