Trevor Carson Completes Move To Cheltenham Town

30 June 2014

Goalkeeper Trevor Carson becomes the fifth new signing of the summer here at Whaddon Road.

We can today confirm the signing of goalkeeper Trevor Carson on a two-year contract here at Whaddon Road.

Trevor, 26, left Bury at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract but Robins fans will likely recognise him from between the posts for Portsmouth where he spent the majority of last season on loan.

His arrival is the fifth of the summer as Mark Yates continues to remodel his squad and he replaces outgoing Scott Brown who joined SPL side Aberdeen this summer.

"I'm delighted obviously," said Trevor.

"It's not nice being on the scrapheap and basically out of a job. It's the first time I have experienced it in 10 years and it is a worry especially when you have a young family. Mark was the first manager I spoke to him and he rang whilst I was on my honeymoon. People were telling me to perhaps wait but I felt good straight away because he was honest and up front with me.

"Straight away it felt right so I decided to go for it."

Carson began his playing career as a product of the Sunderland Academy and signed professional terms in the 2004-05 campaign but he never made a senior appearance for the top flight club. Whilst with the Black Cats he had loan spells in the Football League with clubs such as Chesterfield, Lincoln, Brentford, Hull and Bury before opting to sign for the latter on permanent terms in May 2012.

The 26-year-old made 50 appearances for the Shakers during his two years with the club but he spent the majority of last season on loan with Portsmouth where he was their number one at Fratton Park. He made 40 appearances for Pompey before being released from Gigg Lane.

Carson is also a former Northern Ireland B and U21 international but he has recently been on the bench for the senior team's friendly matches versus Uruguay and Chile.

We can also confirm that Trevor has been handed squad number 1.

We will have an interview with Trevor Carson available here on YouTube and Robins Player later today.
